Ottawa-Gatineau
Transit Loop
THE LOOP
The Société de transport de l’Outaouais (STO) is currently studying the implementation of a tram/streetcar system that would link Gatineau and Ottawa.
The Supporters of the Loop are proposing the creation of a streetcar loop to connect Ottawa and Gatineau’s rapid transit systems, as well as link Canada’s main National Capital assets and attractions.
LOOP BENEFITS
-
Creates a heritage loop for National Capital visitors – Parliament, ByWard Market, Museum of History, National Gallery.
-
Provides multiple transfer points with Ottawa’s LRT and reduces station congestion issues.
-
Creates bi-directional transit capacity to reduce congestion and improve public transit effectiveness.
-
Improves the connection between workplaces in downtown Ottawa and Gatineau.
-
Creates more public gathering spaces along the Ottawa-Gatineau link.
-
Removes bus, car and truck traffic in front of Parliament Hill offering added convenience, public safety and environmental benefits.
OPPORTUNITY IS NOW
-
The City of Ottawa and the STO are currently evaluating the route for the Ottawa-Gatineau rail link.
-
The Alexandra Bridge is set to be replaced or undergo significant rehabilitation before 2030.
-
There are approximately 200,000 crossings between Ottawa and Gatineau each day and current interprovincial car and transit infrastructure is at maximum capacity.
-
It may be necessary to pedestrianize Wellington Street in the near future for security reasons.
The Supporters of the Loop call on the federal government, the City of Gatineau, the City of Ottawa, the Quebec and Ontario governments, the Algonquin Anishinaabe community and the National Capital Commission to collaborate in evaluating the benefits of a National Capital streetcar loop that links the Ottawa and Gatineau rapid transit systems.
We have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to deliver the best long-term solution for the people of the National Capital Region and all Canadians.
